Like a scene from the worst war movie ever, 18 were killed today in an Acapulco, Mexico shootout. The beautiful resort town was rocked with continuous gunfire for two hours ostensibly between police and members of a drug cartel.
Police and Soldiers admitted that they are uncertain whether some of the cartel members are cops also. Four cops were found handcuffed in a house allegedly occupied by the cartel but it is unclear whether the cops handcuffed themselves to make it look as though they were hostages.
Hand-grenades were hurled through the air by both sides. Explosions erupted, hotels were evacuated, tourists fled into the streets running for their lives.
Undoubtedly, this was Acapulco's worst night in many years and the entire event seemed to arise from nothing more than someone informing local Police that a house was occupied by people with guns. The policy in Mexico seems to be to attack first and ask questions later. The occupants of the house had to respond with gunfire in self-defense since they were under attack.
As for gun ownership, it would be difficult to find any Mexican male over the age of 21 who doesn't own a gun. Gun ownership is a source of pride in Mexico. Especially Colt-45 automatics, engraved or embellished with silver and ivory. Shooting guns into the air is a favorite way to celebrate in Mexico.
Police in Acapulco will have a difficult time explaining how they justified their actions and on what basis they involved troops in the fray. The economic damage from this incident will be huge as thousands of tourist are now certain to cancel their vacations to that part of paradise.
