It is this unique perspective of isolation and insulation that makes Ireland such an enchanting place to visit, or as the Irish say "You are welcome to visit, but you can't stay."
Competing with the French for the title of the worlds most unpleasant citizenry, the citizens of Belfast have taken to smashing the windows of the city's small Romanian population with bricks. Threats and verbal abuse added to the problem, convincing the Romanians to call the police for protection.
Bundled up by the local constabulary, 115 Romanians were relocated today following a night spent at a local church. They will remain in their new location for at least a week and then attempt to return to their homes although many are frightened that they could be killed by the thugs who have threatened them.
The Romanians say they love living in Belfast, but not while in fear for their lives. Many say they will not return to their homes and would rather return to Romania than be constantly threatened.
Local police are being criticized for failing to act earlier since the attacks have occurred over several months. Residents in the community claim that the attacks are provoked by the Romanians, simply for being in Belfast. Locals say that the Romanians are "gypsies" and don't belong in Ireland.
But in Ireland, unless you are from the immediate neighborhood you will likely be subjected to verbal abuse and gossip. Ridiculing people is an Irish pastime which is considered an important part of community involvement.
