FDA To Regulate Cigarettes

The US Food and Drug Administration is poised to take over the regulation of tobacco in the US on the theory that supervision of the manufacturing, packaging and marketing of tobacco products will benefit the American public.

This move may result in further taxes being placed on tobacco products. The US government is not truly motivated to protect the health of its citizens through the outright ban of tobacco because the collection of taxes through the consumption of tobacco is a real money-maker.

In essence, the government wants to create the public appearance of caring for Americans health but not act to regulate at the expense of taxation revenue. The FDA supervision is not likely to impact the tobacco manufacturers in any meaningful manner but does provide public assurance of a concerned government. Sphere: Related Content
