France Refuses To Take Guantanamo Detainees

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France meets with US President Barack Obama on Saturday June 5, 2009 ostensibly to attend D-Day events in Normandy but the major topic of negotiation is France's lack of assistance in re-locating the Guantanamo detainees.

Sarkozy has made his position clear: that France can ill afford to take a chance with the Guantanamo prisoners when the entire country sits on the edge of economic and political disaster. The timing is poor for France and Sarkozy's attitude is that the US created the problem, and the US can solve it without having to depend on France.

The European Union has taken the position that US political problems are of their own making and that no European State should be forced or intimidated into assisting with re-location of the Guantanamo detainees. Obama's efforts are not a first impression in this matter. In fact, the US is resorting to Obama's visit in a final effort to solve the logistical problem of re-location.

What about Cuba? Let's mend ties with Cuba and ask Raul and Fidel to take the Guantanamo prisoners as a gesture of reconciliation. After 50 years of sanctions and interference the US government has really nothing to lose by asking Cuba to assist. A refusal from Cuba is no different than a refusal from Europe.
