Los Angeles Police Chief Bill Bratton held a press conference today in which he announced that one of his Detectives had been arrested by the LAPD for a murder which occurred 23 years ago.
Detective Stephanie Lazarus, age 49, also known as Stephanie Young, wife of LAPD Officer Scott Young, was working the Art Theft Detail at Police Headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. She was arrested when she arrived at work this morning and was immediately booked into the Inmate Medical Section of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Detention Center. Lazarus is accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend's wife in their condo in Van Nuys, California on February 24, 1986.
A horrific crime scene, with the victim severely beaten and shot, it was thought that possibly two individuals had committed the crime. DNA evidence was found at the scene which at the time provided no clues as to the identity of the perpetrator. Lazarus had previously had an affair with the victims husband John Ruetten, an engineer from San Diego, California and this fact was mentioned in the LAPD Case File.
Detectives working across the hall from Lazarus' office followed her and collected the styrofoam cups she discarded. Collecting her saliva from the cups provided the DNA evidence necessary for the arrest.

It will be interesting to find out why it took the LAPD 23 years to consider one of their own Detectives a suspect.
