Mexico has received a $1.4 billion aid package from the US for the specific purpose of building additional prisons. Citing the extreme overcrowding in Mexican prisons with the escalated war on drug gangs, which has resulted in over 40,000 new prisoners, the Mexican government is building three maximum security facilities in Southern Mexico.

12 more prisons are in the process of construction, financed by private investors who see this as a profitable growth industry.

The overcrowded conditions in Mexican prisons have created new problems for law enforcement with violent escapes a common occurrence. There is no law in Mexico against prison escapes as they are considered a prerequisite to the natural and free state of human beings.

Along with the US commitment of financial aid it can be certain that Mexico has officially committed itself to expunge the drug cartels from its territory. As a result, it is expected that violence from the drug gangs will continue to grow over the next 2 to 3 years before the new maximum security prisons are operational.
