The Pentagon announced that it has terminated two missile defense programs under development with Northrup Grumman and Lockheed Martin which total in excess of $10 billion.
Both programs were designed to meet defense objectives against North Korea and Iran and involved the ability to destroy the enemies missiles shortly after launch. The Pentagon cited the cost, limitations, and usability of the missile defense systems in reaching its decision to terminate the contracts.
The underlying purpose of the cancellation is to bring defense budgets within the proposed 2010 budget limitations.
