Three scientists at York University in Toronto, Canada have created a prototype of an alternative to a space 'elevator' which would allow tourists and researchers to travel 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) up to a space station at the edge of space. Inflatable modules using a helium-type gas would be used.
It would take approximately 40 minutes to ascend the tower and tourists would be able to have a space view of 600 kilometers in any direction without experiencing zero gravity.
A demonstration is planned in the coming weeks.
