As a result of this kindness she was granted permission to adopt the Malawian orphan Mercy James. The money will fund 6 orphanages - buy clothes, shoes, books and mosquito nets.
Mercy, 4 years old, is on her way to a new life in America. She will join her brother David Banda, who is 3 years old, another orphan Madonna had previously adopted from Malawi.
There was much controversy surrounding the adoption. Mercy, who's Mother died after giving birth to her daughter, still has a father wanting to keep his daughter. He said she is not an orphan and I am her parent and she needs a parents love.
However Madonna intends to visit Malawi frequently with her children to instill in them cultural pride of their country.
The Judge was full of praise for Madonna's strength of character, determination and her good deeds and care of children in need.
